Defending Against Social Engineering: The Human Firewall

By Levi, Founder of LeviTech Academy.

When people think about cybersecurity, they often picture firewalls, antivirus programmes, and encrypted servers. But the truth is, the weakest link is almost always human. Social engineering exploits trust, curiosity, and sometimes even kindness — and it’s one of the most common ways attackers gain access. I learnt this the hard way during my early days coding and building systems at LeviTech Academy.

I remember one evening debugging a small internal tool, when I received a seemingly legitimate email from a “team member” asking for login credentials to test a feature. Without thinking, I almost complied. Something in the phrasing caught my attention, and I paused. That pause saved the system from a potential breach. That moment was my first real lesson in being the “human firewall.”

Social engineering takes many forms: phishing emails, phone scams, impersonation, and even in-person tactics. Attackers rely on psychological tricks rather than technical vulnerabilities. That’s why defending against them requires awareness, habits, and constant vigilance — just like coding, it’s a skill you develop over time.

From personal experience, the most effective defence starts with verification. Always verify the source, use encrypted communication channels, and keep your software updated to stay one step ahead of modern attackers. At LeviTech Academy, we teach that security is a mindset, not just a set of tools.
